Dear Romulus Families:
As you are probably aware, the Romulus Community School District Board of Education is asking our community to vote upon two very important ballot issues. We’re writing to you to make sure you have all the factual information you need to make your decision.
The “Hold Harmless” levy authorization WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR TAXES BY MORE THAN YOU PAID LAST YEAR. We’re seeking a maximum levy of 2.5 mills – your previously authorized levy was more than twice that, at 5.1314 mills. LAST YEAR Romulus Community Schools ONLY LEVIED 1.3137 MILLS, which is the expected continued result should voters approve our request.
The “Sinking Fund”, currently at .75 mills, would rise to 3 mills. This means an increase of 2.25 mills above what you are currently assessed. This increase is critical to maintaining our buildings and facilities. We’ve already identified nearly $20 million of necessary repairs and improvements to ensure our students are in a safe, productive learning environment. A few of those needs are:
- Major roofing, parking lot, plumbing, and window repairs
- Replacement of fire suppression systems in all buildings
- Technology upgrades and infrastructure improvements
- Major building maintenance repairs
- Repair to Football/Soccer/Track area. Estimates to fully repair are between $500,000 and $1 million. DUE TO A RECENT SAFETY INSPECTION, THE FOOTBALL STADIUM WILL CLOSE AT THE END OF THIS SEASON IF WE CANNOT REPAIR IT.
Unfortunately, there is some incorrect information being distributed about the “Wayne County Enhancement Millage”. This county-wide millage, collected by Wayne County RESA, was approved by voters across the county in 2016. The CITY collected $1,633,016 for the COUNTY to distribute to school districts on a per-pupil basis. The ROMULUS COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT received $998,949, most of which was allocated to purchasing 17 buses and some security improvements. These funds ARE NOT part of our regular budget, as we, as a community, have no control over the continuation of this levy once the original levy expires.
